Interview: Raw Michelle Talks With Laura-Jane The Rawtarian
First off, I’d like to say thank you very much for taking the time to talk “raw” with me… If you wouldn’t mind just starting off by letting us know a little bit about yourself and your path “to” and “on” raw?
Thank you so much for having me, Michelle. It’s my genuine pleasure to be here talking raw with you!
I am a 100% raw vegan. I have been raw for almost two years now and I absolutely love it. But I didn’t start out as healthy as I am now!
I was raised by health-conscious parents, but I always rolled my eyes at my mother’s healthy casseroles and at how she could get excited about the simplest foods, like crisp apples or a juicy cucumber. I snuck as much junk food as I could, and as I grew up my eating habits got worse and worse.
In 2001, I did become a vegetarian. However, I was a “junk food vegetarian.” I ate mostly processed foods, veggie hot dogs, cheese buns, frozen pizzas, chips, candy and much more. I was addicted to junk food. Only very rarely did I eat fresh fruits or vegetables, and when I did I considered it a chore–not a pleasure. Although I was never obese, I certainly carried a more weight than was ideal for my body type. I also had acne-prone skin and, even though I was in my late twenties, I would often have terrible breakouts. I was always tired, lethargic and low energy. Every year, I gained a few more pounds.
Two years ago I realized that I was unhappy with the way I looked and felt. I heard of raw foods out of the blue, and something just clicked for me. I thought that it made sense, and so I decided to go totally raw for 30 days. It was tough, and I was really looking forward to the end of my 30 day raw food experiment.
However, when day 31 (the end of my raw food experiment) came and I was going to go back to the junk food that I used to love, I realized that I didn’t want to go back. By the end of my first 30 days as a raw vegan I had begun to actually enjoy eating real fruit and vegetables! And so I have stayed totally raw for almost two years now.
I feel great. I have lost all that extra weight, I feel so energetic, and my skin has cleared up, too. I am now settled into my own raw lifestyle and now I’m focusing my energy on helping others make positive change in their lives through raw foods. My passion is helping others realize that they can “retrain” their tastebuds to enjoy–and even crave–healthy foods.
