What Are Chia Seeds And Do They Contribute To Health?
Yes, these are the same seeds used in Chia Pets but they are a very nutritious food source first and foremost. Native Americans, for centuries, would take a pouch of chia seeds and a gourd of water on their trips. They used the seeds as a food source, which when taken with the water, the seeds would hydrate their bodies for endurance.
When chia seeds are submerged in water the shells opens up and absorb up to nine times their volume in water. This then forms a gel, which is called Chia Seed gel. The gel helps keep us hydrated. The gel is 90% soluble fiber, which is beneficial for our digestive tracks. People often use chia seeds when they are involved in sports or physical activities for endurance.
Chia seeds have twice the protein of any other seed or grain, five times the calcium of milk, boron which is a trace mineral that helps transfer calcium into your bones, and omega 3 and omega 6 which are essential fats.
