Raw Food Detox Diet

Raw Food DetoxThe following information is for education only and is not meant to diagnose, prescribe, or treat illness.

The body is constantly going through some state of detoxification. The rate of detoxification plays a lot into what you are consuming and how much you are consuming.

Essentially the cleaner your diet becomes, the more your body will detox. Also, the less food you eat, the more your body will go through detox. The reason this happens is, when eating cleaner or fewer foods, your body has the time and resources to do the detoxifying. Whereas when your diet is poor and/or you consume a lot, your body has a lot of other functions to perform and unfortunately detoxifying may not be a priority.

When someone goes on a water fast, they are giving their body a great chance to detoxify. With very little stress from digestion, the body has a chance to purge toxins from the cells. Likewise, when on a 100% raw food plant based diet, the body is essentially taking in mostly water, again giving the body ample opportunity to purge toxic buildup.

Water fasting or a raw food detox could potentially bring on significant detox to the point of making you feel extremely uncomfortable. Lots of detox symptoms can occur like: skin breakouts, headaches, nausea, fatigue and a whole slew of others. Sometimes, it is necessary to slow things down a bit if the cleansing becomes too uncomfortable.

I liken detoxing to road construction. When there is less traffic (food), the workers (the body) are less distracted and have more "opportunity" to do their job. Additionally, when vehicles, i.e. traffic (food) is used that offer assistance (and less resistance) to the workers, more work can be done. Vehicles such as bull dozers, etc. (food like raw fruits and vegetables, smoothies, green juices, nuts, seeds and water) are ideal for the given situation, but regular traffic isn't. The non-essential traffic (and food) will still exist, but it can just be diverted down someone else's road for the time being :) Also, during construction (detox), it may look and feel like a messy chaos, but the end result is often beautiful and more functional.

Often, herbs can be added to your daily regime to go deeper into detoxification. Some herbs are specific to the organ that it helps to detox, for example, milk thistle can help further detox the liver. It is often suggested to clean organs one at a time when going through a deliberate detox. Some people feel that it is only suggested to be done this way unethically so that people feel obligated to purchase all products (sometimes half a dozen or more) in order to feel fully clean. Others feel strongly that there is a purpose for organ detoxes to be done in stages. Different companies suggest different orders for detoxing, but it is the general consensus that the colon, and therefore going on a colon cleansing diet should be the first course of action. Full body cleanses are still very popular, effective, and some might argue, way less complicated.

There are ways to help the detox along, alleviating some of the onslaught of symptoms. Colon cleansing is often suggested during a water fast, a raw food detox diet, a juice fast (or feast), or a green smoothie fast. This helps to quickly eliminate toxins from your body that are dumped into the colon. Colon cleansing can also help clean the colon walls, which in turn reveals the villi, which are the little hairs that pull in nutrients from your food into the bloodstream as it passes through the digestive tract, resulting in greater assimilation of nutrients.

When looking at various protocols at several healing centers, specifically raw food healing centers, I noticed a pattern in what is to be removed from the diet and what is added to the diet in order to encourage healing. Patients are to remove meat, dairy, fish, eggs, bread, pasta, pizza, sugar, salt, coffee, alcohol and cooked food from their diets, essentially leaving only raw, organic, gluten-free, sugar-free, caffeine-free foods during healing. Eliminating the stress from digestion and in some cases, the poisons, is one battle defeated. Another important factor is giving your body the proper tools and resources, i.e. the right foods. Also.. what they commonly do is assist the detox by way of colonics and enemas. Other important factors may be to incorporate light exercise (walking and rebounding), group therapy sessions and measuring.

Measuring is important so that you know where you've been, where you are and how close you are to your goals. Many things might be "measured", such as blood glucose levels for diabetics, vitamin & mineral & nutrient levels (in order to avoid deficiencies), weight, and more. Incidentally, there is a documentary regarding raw foods that is being discussed heavily right now in the world of raw food, called Simply Raw: Reversing Diabetes in 30 Days. I don't want to give everything away but some participants at the healing center went off their insulin after just 3 days on a raw food diet. Unbelievable!

As mentioned, light exercise such as walking and/or rebounding is sometimes incorporated in the quest to becoming healthier during a detox. Rebounding is essentially jumping up and down on a mini-trampoline. Doing this assists the bodies lymphatic system to move around and do it's job (move toxins out). Unlike other "systems" in the body, the lymphatic systems does not have a pump to help it "move" so exercise and massage is required so that it doesn't get sluggish and begin to harbour toxins, bacteria and parasites. Using a rebounder is arguably the best way to get your lymphatic system movin' and eliminatin' :)

Possibly the best "non-food" way to detox is to bounce on a rebounder AND THEN hop in the sauna. Apparently this process flushes toxins and fat from the cells at a rapid pace!
